Luxury settings with starring roles

Characterised by exoticism, opulence, tranquillity or natural beauty, backcloths chosen for hit TV shows captivate viewers in search of an exclusive place to stay.

When chosen as a setting in a TV series, a luxury hotel or residence unfurls its assets in the fullest and most intimate way. Which inevitably results in a soaring number of searches and reservations, for these addresses taking centre stage. Our first two examples are Four Seasons hotels, the world’s N°1 luxury hospitality brand with the most 5-star ratings across its hotels, resorts, spas, and restaurants. Season 3 of The White Lotus, the Emmy-winning series by Mike White, is a dark tale about a wealthy, but very vulnerable, American family with lots of twists, turns, and a shocking finale. It was filmed at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui on the Gulf of Thailand, an idyllic island sanctuary where guests (usually) bask in serene, natural beauty: sandy beaches, blue seas, lush tropical greenery, coconut groves. With exotic yet contemporary Thai decor, private villas with private pools, multi-bedroom residences, warm hospitality, rich culinary experiences, and bespoke wellness programmes at the Spa, the resort is ranked by Travel + Leisure as one of the world’s top 500 hotels for 2025. According to Hotels.com, rates start at $1,056 per night in May and early June, peak at $8,031 shortly after the season premiere in early March, then drop to $1,802 at the end of the month.

Another Four Seasons hotel which impressed viewers in just one episode of the Netflix series Emily in Paris, Season 2, is the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat. Emily spends a weekend with two girlfriends at this legendary address built in 1908, overlooking the Mediterranean and recalling the aristocratic origins of tourism on the Côte d’Azur. Renovated throughout in 2009 while retaining its marble, linen, and silk, it embodies French-style sophistication in a 17-acre park on the cape. Fabulous suites and villas, the famous Club Dauphin, its pool, restaurant, bar and cabanas, a heavenly spa, dining experiences that include the star-rated restaurant Le Cap… Guests adore the hotel’s timeless opulence and stunning setting, but also its glamour. It has long welcomed royalty, the rich and famous, literary and artistic celebrities, such as Winston Churchill, Aristotle Onassis, Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor, William Somerset Maugham, Madonna…

Fans of travel who prefer secluded destinations were immediately drawn by Villa La Cassinella, one of three elegant residences in Italy that play seductive roles in Season 3 of the HBO series Succession. Hosting a meeting between Roman Roy and tech entrepreneur Lukas Matsson, Villa La Cassinella on the banks of Lake Como is only accessible by boat. Ideal privacy in which to focus on the deal in hand, or totally disconnect, in comfort and luxury with authentic Italian flair, an infinity pool with 22-carat gold tiles, a gym, screening room, and attentive staff providing all-round service for up to 17 guests within beautiful, landscaped gardens. The Succession production team was able to rent the three villas at short notice due to wedding cancellations during the pandemic. Normally declining film crews on the premises, they rent, if ever available, for around $100,000 per week.

Finally, the Soma Retreat made a real impact in the 2020 mini-series Nine Perfect Strangers starring Nicole Kidman. Ten minutes from the beach, it is surrounded by a rainforest in the Byron Bay hinterland in New South Wales. Its owners, media & tech entrepreneur Peter Ostick and Vedic meditation practitioner Gary Gorrow, acquired the 19.7-acre estate for $1.8 million in 2016, then built an airy 10-bedroom residence hosting wellness, yoga and meditation retreats, corporate events, and Airbnb holiday rentals. Possibly already sold, this rare getaway was back in the spotlight last October with a price tag of around $15 million.
