The first circular design of its kind in the Middle East, the Aldar Headquarters building on the Al Raha Beach development in Abu Dhabi was completed in 2010. Signed MZ Architects, 110 metres high on 23 floors, it is slim and stunning with a diagonal “clam shell” grid structure made of steel.
A bridge, showroom, a sculpture in itself, The Twist in Norway’s Kistefos Sculpture Park (open year-round) spans 60 metres across the river. Designed by the Danish Bjarke Ingels Group, it opened in 2019 and hosts three galleries exhibiting high-end international art.
Designed by the Barozzi/Veiga Studio of Barcelona, the 12,000 sqm Szczecin Philharmonic Hall in Poland offers bold lines recalling icebergs, yet complicit with nearby neo-Gothic buildings. Inaugurated in 2014, it hosts several concert halls, magnificent acoustics, and sober interior decor.
The Beijing Galaxy Soho, a 330,000 sqm office, retail & leisure complex, opened in 2012. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects of London, its four continuous volumes unleash rippling space with no corners or abrupt features. Recalling Antique China’s inner courtyards, its immersive atmosphere is inspired by connectivity.
Designed by Frank Gehry “from the inside out” as a “living room for the city”, the Walt Disney Concert Hall became home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2003. It proposes a stainless steel exterior like silver sails, exemplary acoustics, and a warm auditorium where 2,265 fans surround the orchestra on a yellow cedar stage.
